Beautiful. Peaceful. Nothing really compares, especially if you know the story behind it.
In fairness, we barely got to see the place. My wife tripped in a hole in their lawn and broke her foot shortly after arriving. Some passers by helped us get her into our car. They refunded us the money which was a good gesture. My concern is that my wife is screaming in pain, all we want is directions to the nearest medical attention, and all the gate person wanted was for us to fill out some kind of incident report. The empathy was lacking until I had made it blatantly clear they could either help or get out of our way.
This is around 45 minutes detour, not worth it for 10$/person and not worth the time.
Kahanu was one of our favorite destinations on Maui and we were pleased to support it with our admission fees (get the coconut candy while you're paying to get in - you won't regret it). The place felt holy to us, both in the natural and human sense of the word. The staff was kind, friendly, and professional. The bathrooms were clean and well kept. I'm sure the rental car company would prefer we didn't drive down the road to get to Kahanu Garden, but then I'm sure they would have objected to a few more of our decisions.
What an incredible find! The several one-star reviews (other than the one written by the man whose wife broke her foot), are signs to me that some people are just not cut out for this kind of thing. It was, however, precisely our kind of thing - a combination of a refreshing walk (easy), stunningly beautiful nature (plants and trees marked for your own self-guided tour of the grounds, as well as gorgeous coastal views), and history, with the enormous magnificent Pi'ilanhale Heiau ruins.
You expect much more from a botanical garden, but after visiting you realize that the original native plants from Maui were just a few compared with the present amazing vegetation. Unfortunately the biggest polinezian ancient temple it is not open for the public. You can see only part of the exterior wall.
